From Democracy to Dictatorship and Genocide: Czechoslovak Jews in Literature, Music and Film

Using close readings of musical works by Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein and Hans Krasa, all written while they were prisoners in the Terezin concentration camp, this lecture explores the composers’ return in the summer of 1944 to a musical Moravia of the imagination. It argues that “Moravia,” like the image of the wild goose, becomes at once a metaphor for freedom and for a landscape of mystery and violence, hovering between hope and death.
Michael Beckerman is Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Music at NYU. He is also a recipient of the Janacek Medal from the Czech Republic a laureate of the Czech Music Council.
