Editorial Cosmopolita (Freier Deutscher Buchverlag)

After an arduous journey, James Illy Friedmann came to Argentina in 1938.  At first, he worked as a traveling bookseller before establishing a bookstore which he named Cosmopolita.   The bookstore then evolved into a German publishing house, Editorial Cosmopolita in Buenos Aires in 1940. Friedmann’s main goal was to publish contemporary non-political literature by exiled authors. He published more than 20 books of exile authors until 1946. Editorial Cosmopolita was the most prominent exile publishing house in Argentina.
