Victor Goldschmidt founded the Verlagsbuchhandlung Victor Goldschmidt in Basel after his arrival in 1939.

Goldschmidt had been the owner of the Grieben Verlag, which had been founded by his grandfather. The publishing house specialized in maps and travel guides. In 1935, he transferred fifty percent of the company to his longtime employee Katharina Feldmann, a non-Jew, in order to avoid Aryanization. The attempt failed, forcing him to sell his business at a huge loss.
