Biographical/Historical Information

The lawyer, financial expert, and civil servant, Hans Schäffer was born in Breslau (Wroclaw, Poland) on April 11, 1886. After World War I, he worked in the German Ministry of Commerce, and was concerned in particular with the problems of inflation and reparations. Schäffer was senior official in the German Ministry of Finance, 1929-1932, when he became director of the publishing house ‘Ullstein Verlag’, where he served until his dismissal under the Nazis in 1933. Beginning in 1933, following the death of its owner Ivar Kreuger, Schäffer oversaw the liquidation and reorganization of the Swedish Match Company (STAB), along with Allen Dulles and Jean Monnet. Schäffer and his family emigrated to Sweden in 1936, where he worked as an investment advisor and was active in Jewish affairs. After 1957, he served as the president of the Council of Jews from Germany. Hans Schäffer died in Joenkoeping, Sweden, on March 20, 1967.
