Photograph Cataloging Internship (Unpaid)

A photograph cataloging internship is available at the Leo Baeck Institute, New York. The intern will be given access to historically valuable and unique materials. The intern will check and correct as necessary existing photograph catalog records in Ex-Libris’ Aleph 500 integrated library system. The intern will catalog using MARC and Library of Congress and local subject headings, with guidance from CCO, DACS, and other cataloging guidelines. In most cases the photographs have been digitized and the intern will be responsible for linking the digital image to the appropriate catalog record.

The intern must work a minimum of two days per week. The internship is unpaid, but past interns have received academic credit. Public transportation costs within New York City will be covered.

Basic cataloging knowledge is required and knowledge of reading and written German is preferred but is not required.

To apply please send your resume and cover letter to lbaeck@lbi.cjh.org with Photograph Cataloging Internship in the subject line.

Archival Internships (3 months or more; unpaid)

Interns are given a thorough introduction to basic archival work and procedures. The tasks of interns are numerous and challenging and include the following duties: reference work (paging and retrieving material requested by patrons), accessioning and cataloging new acquisitions, preserving and conserving older collections, processing small collections or assisting with larger collections, and handling research requests. The duties performed by an intern depend on the length of the internship and can be adapted to the intern's interests. Interns have to commit themselves for a minimum of three months. Although the internship is unpaid, past interns have received academic credit.

Daily transportation within New York City is remunerated. Some reading knowledge of German is required.

Please contact the archivist, Mr. Michael Simonson, at msimonson@lbi.cjh.org with Archival Internship in the subject line.
