Full-time Assistant
Librarian for Technical Services
Responsibilities include:
Technical book
processing.
Liaison to bookbinder.
- LBI Publications &
Interlibrary Loan
Sell in-house
publications as well as duplicate books.
Responsible for interlibrary loan and photocopy requests.
Maintain relationship
with national and international library exchange partners.
Carry out other
professional duties as needed as well as to participate in
committees such as the Preservation Committee. Supervise
paraprofessional staff, volunteers, and interns. The assistant
librarian reports to the Head Librarian.
Qualifications:
- MLS from an ALA
accredited institution or equivalent library experience preferred.
- ·Experience using
Exlibris' Aleph system or another automated library system is
highly desirable.
- Profound knowledge
of library preservation and conservation methods highly desirable.
- Basic knowledge of
German and/or Hebrew is a plus.
- Interest in
German-Jewish history.
- A strong commitment
to customer service, excellent oral, written, and interpersonal
communication skills.
- The position
requires flexibility, multitasking, ability to set priorities and
to work with deadlines, and an ability to work independently as
well as to work well with a team.

The library of the
Leo Baeck Institute is looking for an experienced
Full-time
Librarian for
Cataloging and
Acquisition.
Responsibilities
include:

Catalog German and English
print and non-print materials
using Ex-Libris’
Aleph 500 integrated library system.
Perform copy and original cataloging using Marc 21 and Library of
Congress Subject headings and classification. Additional
responsibilities include record maintenance and to contribute to the
development and maintenance of authority files and to establish
original authority records for names and subjects.

Prepare and process new acquisitions including bibliographical
research, data entry, processing of new shipments
·
Conduct reference services once a week at the reference desk of our
shared reading room with the partners of the Center for Jewish
History. Assist researchers with use of archival and library
collections and be responsible for managing remote reference
queries,
and respond to
research queries
·
Carry out other professional duties as needed as well as to
participate in committees
The cataloger
reports to the Head Librarian.
Qualifications:
·
MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent experience.

Cataloging or cataloging-related experience.
Experience using Exlibris' Aleph system or another automated library
system is highly desirable as is a working knowledge of AACR2,
RLIN21, and Library of Congress classification and subject headings

Excellent reading knowledge of German

Photograph Cataloging Internship
(Unpaid)
A
photograph cataloging internship is available at the Leo Baeck
Institute, New York. The intern will be given access to historically
valuable and unique materials. The intern will check and correct as
necessary existing photograph catalog records in Ex-Libris’ Aleph
500 integrated library system. The intern will catalog using MARC and
Library of Congress and local subject headings, with guidance from CCO,
DACS, and other cataloging guidelines. In most cases the photographs
have been digitized and the intern will be responsible for linking the
digital image to the appropriate catalog record.
The intern must work a minimum of two days per week. The internship is
unpaid, but past interns have received academic credit. Public
transportation costs within New York City will be covered.
Basic
cataloging knowledge is required and knowledge of reading and
written German is preferred but is not required.

Archival Internships (unpaid)
Interns
are
given
a thorough introduction to basic archival work and procedures. The
tasks of interns are numerous and challenging and include the following
duties: reference work (paging and retrieving material requested by
patrons), accessioning and cataloging new acquisitions, preserving and
conserving older collections, processing small collections or assisting
with larger collections, and handling research requests. The
duties performed by an intern depend on the length of the internship
and can be adapted to the intern's interests. Although the
internship is unpaid, past interns have received academic credit.
Daily
transportation within New York City is remunerated. Some reading knowledge
of German is required.

Library Internships (unpaid)
Interns are given an introduction to
basic library tasks and work flow procedures in a special library
which is recognized as the foremost research library to preserve
source material and to provide research services on the collective
history and culture of German speaking Jewry. Information about the
unique library collection can be found

The tasks of library interns typically include: handling of research
requests including bibliographic retrieval in online catalogs and
databases, retrieving and re-shelving books according to the Library
of Congress classification, preservation of books and periodicals,
accessioning of new donations and purchases, as well as other
aspects of collection development. We are using Ex-Libris’ Aleph 500
integrated library system. The duties performed by an intern depend
on the length of the internship and can be adapted to the intern's
interests. Applications for longer internships are preferred.
Basic reading knowledge of German is
required. Library studies students and literature majors are
preferred.
Daily transportation within
New York City is remunerated.
