Friday, January 20, 2012 11:00 am The Gestapo, the SS, and the Reich Main Security office were once housed in the same building just steps away from Potsdamer Platz in the heart of Berlin. Today a permanent exhibition documents apparatus of Nazi persecution. Dr. Andreas Nachama, director of the “Topography of Terror” foundation, will discuss the exhibition’s new permanent home as well as an exhibition coming to the UN.
At the 9th Leo Baeck Salon, seventeen young artists transformed shipping containers in an industrial Berlin neighborhood into art spaces with sculptures inspired by LBI collections. The artists, all students in Gregor Schneider’s sculpture class at the Berlin University of the Arts, engaged with LBI archives at the Jewish Musuem in Berlin.
Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer appointed an independent commission to investigate the role of the German Foreign Office during the Nazi Regime. He and one of the commission members, Dr. Norbert Frei, will discuss the initiative and the results of the investigation.
The exhibition “Final Sale. The End of Jewish Owned Businesses in Nazi Berlin” documents the process by which Jews in Germany were expropriated through the examples of 16 Berlin businesses, but that is only half the story. It also demonstrates the flourishing of Jewish entrepreneurship in Berlin before 1933, when the city was a center of Jewish life.
The history of the Jewish Hospital Berlin is remarkable in that it was that it was the only Jewish organization in Germany that was permitted to operate throughout the Nazi years. The documents, photos, and objects on display document 250 years of social and medical history, from the times of Moses Mendelssohn to the 20th century.
