On June 19, 2012, Chinese Deputy Consul General Mr. Zhu Wanjin attened the opening of LBI’s current exhibit, “Destination Shanghai” and addressed over 150 guests, many of whom were former Shanghai refugees and their families.

Destination Shanghai: The Jewish Community of Shanghai, 1936-1949
June 19 – September 21, 2012 LBI’s new exhibition looks at life in Shanghai’s Jewish Ghetto, the last refuge for almost 20,000 German and Austrian Jews between 1936 and 1941. Shanghai was virtually the last destination for European Jews where visas were not required.
Conference: German-Speaking Jews in New York City: Their Immigration and Lasting Presence
Leo Baeck Institute and The Jewish Studies Center at Baruch College will present a day-long conference on German-Jewish immigration and presence in New York City on May 5, 2011. Panelists including distinguished scholars, authors of fiction and poetry, and filmmakers will discuss the impact that German-speaking Jews had on the city.
Starting Over: The Experience of German Jews in America, 1830-1945
This exhibit traces the history of German-Jewish immigration to America, beginning with the quest for freedom from restrictive decrees and quotas in Europe in the early 19th century and continuing through the arrival of refugees from Nazi persecution. The exhibit includes a section on the history of the Leo Baeck Institute.
