Seeking Senior Development Officer

Job description:

The Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) seeks a dynamic, articulate, and well-organized senior manager and fundraiser to join its team.  Having recently completed a fundraising feasibility study, the LBI is preparing to launch a multi-year, multimillion-dollar campaign to bolster its endowment and programming initiatives. The Senior Development Officer will liaise with the Executive Director, Trustees, and other LBI team members while managing campaign and annual fundraising efforts and the implementation of a broad-based strategy for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major and leadership gifts through a variety of channels.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Executive Director, Trustees, and other LBI leadership in cultivating prospects and securing campaign gifts from core donors;
  • Manage a portfolio of up to 100 major donors and prospects, cultivating and stewarding gifts at all levels;
  • Play integral role in personalizing the “moves management” process, with strategies to engage new donors and elevate gift levels of current low and mid-range donors, write proposals, and solicit outright and planned gifts;
  • Liaise with LBI leadership on all campaign-related initiatives including: Campaign Committee meetings, campaign stewardship reports, prospect meetings and necessary follow-up, and help plan and attend campaign cultivation events, receptions, dinners, etc.;
  • Manage annual fundraising initiatives overseeing mailings, acknowledgements, tracking, data entry, etc.


The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated success and proven ability to personally cultivate, solicit, and steward leadership funding from individuals;
  • Excellent attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and to meet deadlines;
  • Polish and professionalism to interact with donors, trustees, senior management, and other external contacts on the phone, in person, and in various forms of correspondence;
  • Facility with budgets and goal setting/projections;
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills (proficiency with German language a plus, but not required);
  • Strong interest in the German-Jewish narrative and the value of preserving and promoting historically significant archives;
  • Experience in planned giving and/or capital campaigns and familiarity with corporate and foundation giving;
  • Understanding of development software (e.g. Raiser’s Edge, NationBuilder, etc.) and confidence using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint;
  • An aptitude for online fundraising, innovative audience outreach initiatives, and integrating new technologies to promote LBI.


  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience with a strong knowledge of development activities;
  • Experience with fundraising campaigns and managing a portfolio of major and leadership donors;
  • Bachelor’s degree required; MA preferred.
