Biographical/Historical Information

The Charlottenkreuz was named after the Queen of Württemberg, Charlotte of Schaumburg-Lippe. It was commissioned in January of 1916 by King William II. It was awarded to individuals during the First World War for merit in the field, or at home to those who provided war-related care.

Wilhelm Mayer was one of the founders, along with Franz Wilhelm (1846-1938), of a metalware factory in Stuttgart. He was born in 1840 in Lauffen am Neckar, and studied metalwork and engraving in Stuttgart. In 1865, he founded an art gallery. He died in Stuttgart in 1920.
