    A family are gathered together, while the pater familias talks to them. An older woman sits while feeding a duck. A mother holds onto the shoulder of a her young son, while another woman leans on a walking stick grasped with both hands. Inscription: "Rüstung auf den Schabis;" in Hebrew, "Yom hakodesh" [Preparing for Shabbath]

Biographical/Historical Information

Terracotta figurines like these were modelled by the Sohn family: Franz Joseph, Anton, Theodor, and Ferdinand of Zizenhausen in Baden. Usually the patterns for their figurines were modelled after contemporary drawings by artists, including Hieronymus Hess who lived in Basle. The Zizenhauser terracottas were in high demand for a long time and sold at fairs all over Europe. About 800 different moulds existed, though only few of them depict Jewish scenes. Others represent various aspects of everyday life during the early 19th century.
