Biographical/Historical Information

The Reichsadler was the German "Imperial eagle" featured on the German coat of arms, which has roots in Holy Roman heraldry.

The physician Marta Fraenkel was born in Cologne in 1896 but grew up in Frankfurt after the death of her parents. She studied medicine in Bonn and Frankfurt, receiving her medical degree from the University of Frankfurt in 1923. Until 1935, she worked for medical institutions in Düsseldorf and Dresden. After a sojourn in Brussels, she emigrated to New York City in 1938. She lived briefly in Washington, D.C. as a medical advisor for the Social Security administration. Marta Fraenkel died in New York City in 1976. The Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden named an exhibition room in her honor.
