Biographical/Historical Information

Samuel Meyer Ehrenberg was the founder of the first modern Jewish day school in Germany, at Wolfenbuettel. Ehrenberg was the great-grandfather of the Jewish Theologian Franz Rosenzweig.

The Leo Baeck Institute Art Collection has portraits by the same artist of other members of the family: two versions of Samuel Meyer Ehrenberg's mother, Hale Meyer (cataloged at 77.25a and 2017.12); and Samuel Meyer Ehrenberg's uncle, Schemaja Maas (cataloged at 2017.13). One of Hale Meyer’s portraits (cataloged at 77.25a) has an inscription engraved on the back of the frame (not a signature), giving the name of the painter as: "I.Schroeder, Maler." Since there was no painter by that name active in 1815, we might assume the hand of the goldsmith Johannes Wilhelm Schroeder, 1784-1847, who worked in Lübeck.
