Wilhelm Mayer was one of the founders, along with Franz Wilhelm, of a metalware factory in Stuttgart. He was born in 1840 in Lauffen am Neckar, and studied metalwork and engraving in Stuttgart. In 1865, he founded an art gallery. He died in Stuttgart in 1920.
