Biographical/Historical Information
Paul Citroen grew up in Berlin, his parents were Dutch Jews. He studied art at a young age, and in 1919 studied at the Bauhaus with Paul Klee, Wasilly Kandinsky and Johannes Itten. His painting Metropolis, which he started in 1923, influenced Fritz Lang's film Metropolis. He settled in Amsterdam in 1927, where he initially mainly engaged in photography. In 1937 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague, where he lectured till 1960, except during the war years.
