Biographical/Historical Information
The sculpture was given to World War I pilot Hermann Sommerfeld.
Almost half of the 5500 pilots serving in World War I died in accidents caused by faulty material or unreliable air security. For this reason, pilots were often imbued with a special aura of heroic bravery.
