    The top of the vessel (i.e. the head of the woman figure) is removable.

  • Summary

    A ceramic vessel that depicts an older woman wearing a green blouse, white apron, and orange skirt. She has an umbrella and handbag under one arm and holds a pitcher with both hands, from which the vessel would dispense liquids. On the woman's apron is printed the message "Die Tante halte stets in Ehren/ Tuh' auf ihr Wohl ein Tässchen leeren." The woman's head detaches in order to pour liquids into the vessel.

Biographical/Historical Information

The idea behind this ceramic pot is wordplay: a "Kaffeetante" in German describes a woman who likes to drink coffee, as part of the cultural practice of afternoon coffee and cake. This playful ceramic was not necessarily mass-manufactured, but may have been produced on commission by the family.
