Biographical/Historical Information

In 2005, the German Consulate in New York on behalf of the city of Wiesbaden honored Gaby Glueckselig with awarding her the city's medal for her efforts at reconciliation between Germans and Jews.

Gabriele Bertha Netter was born on April 30, 1914, in Wiesbaden. In 1942, Gaby Netter married Fritz Glueckselig; the couple immigrated to the U.S., and they became American citizens in 1944. After her retirement from designing jewelry, Gaby volunteered for many years at the Leo Baeck Institute. Gaby Glueckselig passed away on April 22, 2015.

At the time of receiving her award, German authorities returned to her a small crystal bowl of clear glass, which had been stolen from her father's store during Kristallnacht in 1938. The bowl is cataloged under call number 2019.38.
