Hanna Lange Collection

Johanna Lange was born Nov.11, 1893 in Strasbourg. She received her doctoral degree from Frankfurt University in 1924. In 1925 she married the merchant Max Strauss, who died 3 years later in Frankfurt. Hanna Lange Strauss immigrated to the United States in the 1930s, where she practiced medicine. In 1957 she got married to the lawyer Henry Pindar in New York. She died on Jan. 26, 1993.

Henry F. (Kurt Fritz) Pindar (1885-1964) was born in Koenigsberg in East-Prussia. He was a highly accomplished lawyer in Germany until 1933 and then in Zurich (Switzerland) and in New York.

Henry Pindar’s brother, the conductor Carl Alwin was born as Alwin Oskar Pinkus 1891 in Koenigsberg. He conducted in several German opera theaters before being called to the Vienna State Opera in 1920. He left Austria in 1938 and went to Mexico, where he conducted opera from 1941 until his death in 1945. From 1920 to 1938 he was married to the singer Elisabeth Schumann.

Siegfried Loeb (1886-1941) was a high ranking civil servant in Germany before 1933. He emigrated to England in 1938 and died there 3 years later.

Hanna Lange’s first husband, Max Strauss had children from his previous marriage to Hedwig Roedelheimer. One of their 3 sons was William Strauss, the father of Julian Strauss.
