Biographical Note

Elizabeth Melamid was born as Elisabeth Jonas on April 13, 1921 in Hamburg, Germany, the daughter of Dr. Julius Jonas and Julia Jonas née Oppenheimer. Together with her sister Margaret and with the help of the rescue mission “Kindertransport” she escaped Nazi Germany in 1938 to England and then immigrated to the United States, where she married George Melamid.

The inventor and industrialist Michael Melamid (1882-1950) managed chemical oil companies in Belgium and in the United States. He and his wife Sina (Zinaida) née Gruenholtz entertained guests in their villa in Antwerp, Belgium and then again in their apartment in New York City.
