Brendel (Dorothea) Mendelssohn Veit Schlegel (1764-1839)

Brendel was Mendelssohn’s eldest surviving child. In 1778, when she was 14 her parents arranged her marriage to Simon Veit the son of a prominent family of Berlin Jewish bankers. In 1790, her son Johannes was born, followed three years later by her son Philipp. One of the most important salonières in Berlin, in the 1790’s Brendel changed her name to Dorothea and her circle of friends became dominated by Christian intellectuals.
