The Defense tax for the Jewish woman!

The year 1913 brought the “defense tax” to the German people. In view of Germany’s glorious uprising one hundred years ago, we gladly bore in order to keep our fatherland strong and vigorous. As one hundred years ago, the Jews, too, gladly shouldered the sacrifices that were demanded of them for the fatherland, but the Jews in the German Empire must pay an additional defense tax, a defense tax that will serve to make their complete equality a reality. This defense tax is raised by the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens whose motto is:

“To defend oneself is honorable!”
But this defense also absolutely requires the support of the Jewish women who up to now have kept themselves on the sidelines unfortunately in a state of doleful ignorance, even though women and girls have already been admitted as regular members to the Central-Verein since 1908. Often the mothers realize their missed duties too late and only when their children are being discriminated against because of their Jewishness.

How many women can say in good conscience they did everything in their might to avert unjustified attacks and shame from their children’s lives?!

If only Jewish women would realize that our organization is the place that energetically repels unjustified attacks on German Jews and successfully fights for the equality of German citizens of the Jewish faith. It is the duty of every Jewish mother to contribute with their defense tax to this organization in the interest and for the benefit of their growing children!

Having tolerated anti-Semitism for decades and standing by idly has already resulted in tremendous disadvantages for the present generation. Again, anti-Semitism raises its head. If our children are to experience full equality not just on paper but in practice, our present generation needs to prepare the ground, the way this is being done successfully at the Central-Verein.

Every Jewish woman must pay a defense tax by becoming a member of the Central-Verein of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith.

We request the attached card back with a signature until the very latest by June 1, 1914. Please also ask for support of the defense tax fort he Jewish woman among your circle of friends.

Our goal is to add one thousand Jewish women to our membership in Hamburg and environs until June 1. Thus we will prove that the Jewish women of Hamburg merely need to be reminded to remember their duties.
