Ernst Gundolf (1882-1945) was born in Darmstadt, Germany. He was the son of the Jewish mathematician Sigmund Gundelfinger and the brother of Friedrich Gundolf, a German-Jewish literary scholar. Ernst Gundolf himself was a writer and artist and was part of Stefan George's circle. He also was friendly with Karl Wolfskehl and Alfred Kubin, whose art greatly influenced him. After brief internment at Buchenwald in 1939, he escaped to London, where he died in 1945.
