Biographical/Historical Information

Heinrich Heine was one of the most significant German poets of the 19th century. He was also a journalist, essayist, and literary critic. His political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. Heine spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris.

Luise Federn-Staudinger was a German sculptor and medalist. Born in Worms, she studied scuplture in Darmstadt with Ludwig Habich. In 1906, she began attending the Académie Colarossi in Paris. She moved to Berlin in 1908 and taught in her studio until 1917. Staudinger married publisher and art dealer Robert Federn in 1909. She had two children before separating from Federn, moving back to Darmstadt in 1917.
