    The reverse side of the wood panel carries the identification (stated above) in enamel paint.

    The figure is dressed in black with a black cap, in contrast to his white beard. His right hand clutching a book to his side, face stern. This is probably one of the earliest surviving portraits of a rabbi. The workmanship is provincial but executed with the care of a miniaturist.
