Biographical/Historical Information

The German author Alice Berend was born in Berlin on June 30, 1875. From 1898 on she contributed to various literary journals, and from 1910 on she published mostly humorous novels about Berlin society as well as books for children. In 1935 she emigrated to Italy, where she died in Florence on April 2, 1938. – Alice Berend was the sister of the painter Charlotte Berend-Corinth.

Emil Stumpp was born in Neckarzimmern in 1885. He studied briefly in Karlsruhe, but was largely self-taught, working as a painter and lithographer in Königsberg. Emil Stumpp died in 1941 while being held as a political prisoner in Stuhm (now Sztum, Poland).
