Biographical/Historical Information

The art historian and museum director Max Jakob Friedländer was born in Berlin in 1867. He was a specialist in Early Netherlandish painting and an important contributor to the Kupferstichkabinett at the Berlin Gemäldegalerie. In 1939 he emigrated to the Netherlands, where he could survive due to the protection of Hermann Goering. Max J. Friedländer died in Amsterdam in 1958.

Benedict Fred Dolbin was born as Fred Pollak in Vienna, Austria on August 1, 1883. 1902-1910 he studied at the Technical University of Vienna and gathered artistic experiences in Cabaret night light with Arnold Schoenberg and others. In 1912 he officially changed his name to Dolbin. In 1926 he moved to Berlin, where he worked as a newspaper cartoonist, art critic and book illustrator. In 1935 he immigrated to New York, where he worked as an illustrator till his death on March 31, 1971.
