Biographical/Historical Information
Adolf Edward Herstein was born in Warsaw (Poland) in 1869. He was a painter and engraver, working and teaching in Poland, France, and Germany. Starting in 1910, he frequently exhibited with the Berlin Secession, a group of modern artists including Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. Herstein also founded a private art school in his studio in Warsaw, open from 1904 to 1911, one of many Jewish private schools in Eastern Europe that offered young Jewish artists an alternative to state institutions. Adolf Edward Herstein died in Berlin in 1932.
