Biographical/Historical Information

Bertalan Göndör was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1908, the younger brother of Emery (Imre) Gondor. Bertalan studied art in Budapest and Vienna and worked as an artist and an illustrator. After the Hungarian “White Terror” (1919-1920) he lived in Vienna, returning to Budapest once Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938. During World War II, he was conscripted into forced labor in eastern Hungary and consequently deported to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp, where he died in March of 1945.
