Biographical/Historical Information

Grete Wolf, known as Wolf–Krakauer after her marriage to Leopold Krakauer, was born in 1890 in Witkowitz, Moravia. She was raised in Vienna in a Jewish middle class family. Her parents supported her creativity from a very early age. She studied at the Wiener Frauenakademie, a Vienna art school for women established in 1897; one of her teachers was the Austrian-Jewish artist Tina Blau. 1911 - 1915 Wolf studied in Vienna and in Munich and Stuttgart, two cities then rich in avant-garde art activity. She specialized in painting by taking classes with Adolph Hölzel in Stuttgart, and with Johannes Itten in Vienna. In 1916 she opened her own studio. In late 1924, in spite a successful career in Vienna, Grete Wolf emigrated with her 2-year-old daughter to Palestine to join her husband Leopold. Grete Wolf-Krakauer died in 1970.
