Biographical/Historical Information

Rabbi Salomon Leib Rapoport was born in Lemberg, Galicia (Lviv, Ukraine) on June 1st, 1790. He spent his life as a Jewish scholar, and rabbi. Rapoport became the rabbi of Tarnopol in 1837, and the chief rabbi of Prague in 1840. He was one of the founders of the movement “Wissenschaft des Judentums”, which was dedicated to the academic study of Jewish texts and their origins. Rapoport wrote the encyclopedia “Erekh Millin” on Hebrew vowel sounds and published numerous biographies. Shlomo Judah Rapoport (“Shir”) died in Prague on October 16, 1867.

Ignác Josef Porges was a portraitist born in Jevičko na Moravě and active in Prague.
