    The painting depicts the harbor of Gloucester, Massachusetts, where Schülein lived between 1942 and 1945 and then again in 1951. Wildflowers bloom on a hillside in the foreground. Buildings outline the edges of the harbor, some boats docked and others in the middle of the harbor. The sun is hidden by dark clouds, though some light peeks through.

Biographical/Historical Information

Julius W. Schülein was born into a family of Munich bankers. After studying law and philosophy, Schülein enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, from which he graduated in 1907. The next year found him in Paris, where he studied at the art school "La Palette." He married the French painter Suzanne Carvallo in 1912 and became co-founder of the New Secession upon his return to Munich in 1913. In 1930 Schülein and his wife moved to Berlin, attracted by the city's vibrant art life. Their stay lasted only three years. The Schüleins fled Berlin after the Nazi takeover to settle again in Paris. After a brief period of internment during the German occupation, Schülein and his wife emigrated to the United States, where he died in 1970.
