    Subject sits in a wood chair with red upholstery. Her right hand rests in her lap and her left hand grasps a handkerchief. She wears a blue dress with a white lace collar, a lace bonnet trimmed with red roses, and a black lace shawl wrapped around her. Her jewelry includes a gold and blue brooch, matching blue and gold earrings, a gold watch on a chain, gold bracelts on each wrist, and gold and diamond rings on each hand. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Companion to 2008.022.

Biographical/Historical Information

Justina Mack (neé Neuberger) was the wife of Wolf Hirsch Mack. She lived the majority of her life in Germany. Justina Mack is a direct forebear (either grandmother or great-grandmother) of Madeleine B. Stern.

The German artist, Conrad Thiem studied at the Munich Academy 1833-1837 before settling in Bayreuth, teaching drawing at a Gymnasium.
