This painting (in addition to 2004.26A) was commissioned by the sitter's family to commemorate their 25th wedding anniversary.
Anna Steinberg was born in 1873 in Hohenhausen (Lippe-Detmold), where her father, a banker, was also mayor for a while. On her mother's side she was related to the old established Schuster family in Ludge. She went to finishing school in Kassel. From 1890 until 1939 she lived in Hanover, from where she emigrated to New York with her only daughter, Alice Herzfeld (Hereld) and two grandsons. She died in 1955.
