Biographical/Historical Information

The Jewish musical choral society “Liederkranz” was founded as “Synagogenchor Männerquartett” in 1858. Over the next decades it featured many named soloists such as - among many others - the pianists Ferrucio Bussoni (1895) and Wilhelm Backhaus (1906); the singers Lilli Lehmann (1904) and Richard Tauber (1921); and the conductors Wilhelm Furtwängler (1916) and Paul Hindemith (1923).
