    Recto: Bas relief profile of Narcisse Leven, founder and president of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, and text "Narcisse Leven P=De L'Alliance Israelite Universelle." Verso: Bas-relief of a woman, who writes on a shield hanging from a tree. The shield features some Hebrew text, clasped hands, and the Tablets of the Law. A temple is in the foreground on left. "E. Hannaux" is to the right of the tree. Around perimeter is "Alliance Israelite Universelle 1860-1910." Stored in original red leather box.

Biographical/Historical Information

Narcisse Leven (1833-1915) was a lawyer and a founder of the Alliance israélite universelle. He served as secretary between 1863 and 1883, vice president 1883-1898, and then president. Leven was also president of the Jewish Colonization Association.

Emmanuel Hannaux was a French sculptor, born in Metz in 1885. He studied in Strasbourg until the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, and then continued in Nancy. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris beginning in 1876, studying under Auguste Dumont, Jean-Marie Bonnassieux, and Gabriel Thomas. He married Matilda Aron in 1889 and had a son, painter Paul Hannaux. Hannaux died in Paris in 1934.
