    The portrait is based on a photograph, which can be viewed on page 263 of the book "Die Coburger Juden : Geschichte und Schicksal" by Hubert Fromm (LBI call number DS 135 G4 C63 F7 1990).

  • Summary

    Portrait subject is in formal dress with five medals pinned to his lapel and jacket and around his neck. The subject wears pince-nez style eyeglasses and two rings on his left hand (one of which is a family ring, gold with jasper, passed down from the subject's father). He has neatly combed hair and a mustache. He stands upright and leans his right arm against a table that has books on it. The subject clutches white gloves in his left hand.

Biographical/Historical Information

David Löwenherz was born in Eisfeld, Germany in 1873. He owned a lumber business in Coburg, Germany. He married Clara (nee Backhaus) and together they had three sons: Max, Walter, and Heinz. During the first World War, Löwenherz converted the rooms of his factory to accomodations for wounded soldiers; for this war effort he was awarded the title of “Kommerzienrat,” the appointment of which was signed by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Löwenherz was also a prominent book collector and helped to found a literary society in Coburg. He died in 1918 at age 45.
