Herbert Wilde was born in Berlin in 1910, the younger son of Alfred and Bertha (née Slupecki) Wilde. He studied dentistry at the University of Berlin and received his dental license in 1935. In 1937 he immigrated to Brussels, Belgium. There he married Johanna Szymanski in March 1941; a year later their daughter Denise was born. In May 1947 the family immigrated to the United States via England and stayed with Herbert Wilde's mother in Brooklyn.
