Biographical/Historical Information

Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) was born in Aussig, Bohemia, as the son of Ismael Mengs, a painter of miniatures, who had converted to Protestantism. Anton Mengs received his training in Dresden and Rome, where he contributed to the decoration of the church San Giovanni, and created a number of portraits of Italian aristocrats. A European celebrity in his time, who was frequently compared to Tizian and Corregio, Mengs was appointed by King Charles III of Spain to become the court painter in 1762. Together with the painter Tiepolo he worked on the frescoes of the royal palace in Madrid.
