Biographical/Historical Information

Elisabeth Bergner (Ettel) was born in Drohobycz (Galicia) in 1897. She first performed in a theater in Innsbruck, then in Zurich, Vienna, and Munich, until she became a famous actress in Berlin. She starred in her first movie in 1923. In 1933 she married Paul Czinner, who had directed most of her movies. The couple emigrated to England, where Elisabeth Bergner continued her career. Eventually she also appeared in German movies and received several awards. She died in London in 1986.
