Biographical/Historical Information

Joseph Mendelssohn, born in Berlin in 1770, was the oldest son of the philosopher, Rabbi Moses Mendelssohn. Joseph Mendelssohn founded the banking house Mendelssohn & Co., one of the most important German banks during the early 20th century. Joseph Mendelssohn died in Berlin in 1848.

Wilhelm Ternite (1786-1871) was a portrait painter, miniaturist, and lithographer, who served as a court painter and inspector of the Royal Art Gallery in Berlin.
