Biographical/Historical Information

Rabbi Leo Baerwald was born in Saaz, Bohemia in 1883. He studied in Breslau before becoming a rabbi in Munich. Shortly after his emigration to New York, he became the first rabbi in a new immigrants’ congregation in Washington Heights, “Congregation Beth Hillel”, a position he held until 1955. He was a member of the boards of the Leo Baeck Institute and of the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe. Leo Baerwald died in New York in 1970.
