Biographical/Historical Information

The scholar, musicologist, musician, and author Eric Werner was born in Vienna, Austria on August 1, 1901, the son of Prof. Julius Werner and Helen née Donath. Eric Werner studied at Universities in Graz, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Göttingen, and Strasbourg, receiving his doctoral degree in 1928. He also studied at conservatories and academies of music in Vienna and Berlin. From 1938 to 1967, he worked at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, N.Y., serving as a professor of musicology and comparative liturgy and as head of the graduate department. From 1966 to 1971, he was chairman of the department of musicology at Tel Aviv University in Israel and also visiting professor at other universities.

The Music Council at the National Jewish Welfare Board in New York named him the first recipient of the National Jewish Music Award; and in 1982, the Republic of Austria awarded him its Great Golden Sign of Merit, First Class for his contributions to the arts and sciences.

Eric Werner died on July 28, 1988.
