Biographical/Historical Information

The Austrian physician and statesman Adolf Fischhof was born in Óbuda (Budapest) in 1816. When he was an assistant physician in Vienna, he was one of the first leaders of the far-reaching revolution of 1848, and he became involved in many of its political institutions. After his arrest and short imprisonment, he practiced medicine in the small village of Emmersdorf near Klagenfurt, Carinthia, writing and publishing political essays and books. Fischhof was one of the first political theoreticians to promote equality among nationalities in Austria-Hungary. Adolf Fischhof died in Emmersdorf in 1893.
