Biographical/Historical Information

The composer Emmerich Kálmán (Kálmán Imre) was born in Siófok, Hungary in 1882. He was most instrumental in developing the Viennese Operetta of the 20th century, following the older examples by Johann Strauss and Franz Lehár, with operettas like “Die Csárdásfürstin” and “Gräfin Mariza”. After the “Anschluss” of Austria to Nazi Germany, Kálmán escaped to France and then to the U.S., returning to France after WW II. Emmerich Kálmán died in Paris in 1953.
