Biographical/Historical Information

The lyric poet Gertrud Kolmar - “one of the most important woman poets” – was born as Gertrud Käthe Chodziesner in Berlin in 1894 (a cousin of Walter Benjamin). her poetry was published in books and German literary journals since the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s. in 1941, she was compelled to forced labor until her deportation to Auschwitz in 1943.
