Biographical/Historical Information

The essayist and political polemicist Maximilian Harden was born as Felix Witkowski in Berlin in 1861. He was the founder of the periodical ‘Die Zukunft’, which was written mostly by himself. Although highly critical of the German Emperor Wilhelm II and in strong opposition to his policies, Harden was politically conservative. During World War I he was one of the strongest advocates in Germany of a negotiated peace. After the establishment of the Weimar Republic, Harden withdrew from public life, and his periodical ‘Die Zukunft’ was discontinued. Maximilian Harden died in Montana, Switzerland in 1927.
