Biographical/Historical Information
The German poet, author and politician Moritz Hartmann was born in Duschnik, Bohemia (Dušníky, Czech Republic) in 1821. He studied philosophy in Prague and in Vienna, and in 1845 he published a volume of patriotic poems, “Kelch und Schwert”, followed by “Neuere Gedichte” in 1846. After serving in the short-lived German parliament in Frankfurt/Main and participating in the 1848 revolution in Vienna, he escaped to London and Paris. Later, Hartmann worked for German and Austrian journals. Moritz Hartmann died in Oberdöbling, near Vienna in 1872.
