Biographical/Historical Information

Max Herschel (1840-1921), a prominent member of the Jewish community in Bonn and leader of its congregation for many years, worked as a bookbinder, stationer, and printer. After a successful business career, he turned his efforts toward writing. In addition to original poetry in German, Herschel specialized in free translation of Hebrew texts into German.
