Biographical/Historical Information

Heinrich Eduard Jacob was born in Berlin in 1889. During the Weimar Republic he worked as a journalist, but he was also known for his plays, short stories, and novels. Starting in 1927 he led the Vienna-based Central European bureau of the newspaper “Berliner Tageblatt”. After the Anschluss, Jacob was arrested and interned in Dachau and Buchenwald. Thanks to the efforts of his later wife, Dora Angel-Soyka, he was released in 1939, and they emigrated to the United States. In New York he continued to publish for Aufbau and other English-language publications. After the war, he returned to Europe but did not permanently settle in any location. Heinrich Eduard Jacob died in Salzburg in 1967.
