Biographical/Historical Information
The motion-picture director Ernst Lubitsch (1892—1947) was born in Berlin, Germany. He achieved success in Germany as a director of historical costume films, such as "Madame DuBarry" (1919, in U.S. called "Passion"), "Anna Boleyn" (1920, in U.S. "Deception"), and "Das Weib des Pharao" (1921). He moved to the U.S. in 1922 to direct Mary Pickford in "Rosita" (1923) and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1933.
